BMW’s Defection From 2019 Detroit Auto Show Another Sign Of Industry Disruption

BMW is ultimately driving out of the 2019 Detroit Auto Show, preferring to focus on the Consumer Electronics Show earlier in January for breaking news and launching models. This defection comes on the heels of the recent announcement by Mercedes-Benz to skip the show and follows earlier decisions by Porsche and Volvo to do the same.

It’s a complicated time in the automotive sector, and decisions like prioritizing CES over the traditional North American International Auto Show are only part of the disruption. On the one hand, there’s the need to keep up profits and sales after years of growth; on the other hand, there’s the need for significant investment due to the pace of change in the mobility industry.
