Nobody Panic But U.S. Light Vehicle Sales Are Poised For A Decline in 2018

Wall Street analysts are taking a big picture approach to auto sales next year, rather sanguine about an expected decline in light vehicle sales in 2018. My colleagues at Cox Automotive, economists Jonathan Smoke and Charlie Chesbrough, emailed me some perspective on the marketplace for 2018.

“The new vehicle market is expected to moderate a bit, falling to 16.6 million units (from 17.1-17.2 expected in 2017). Buying conditions remain very favorable; however, growing competition from off-lease vehicles, coupled with less inventory from summer production cuts, will cause the market to decline a modest amount,” wrote Smoke.
