Volkswagen defies expectations with surge in profits

Despite well-documented and long-running problems – from the emissions scandal of 2015, to ongoing legal issues around compensation in the US and refusal to compensate those in Europe – Volkswagen’s profits have defied expectations and risen by 44 percent in the first quarter of this year.

Christian Stadler, a Professor of Strategy at Warwick Business School, has researched Volkswagen and its recent crisis for his book Enduring Success. He offered the following expert comment on this surge in profits and how it has been achieved:
