Smurfit Kappa begins operation of new technology at its Kent facility

It is expected that the new CHP at the Townsend Heat and Power Plant will cut the mill’s carbon footprint by at least 15%.

In order to meet the ever-increasing demand in the UK and Ireland for lightweight containerboard, the substantial, multi-million pound investment will also increase the capabilities of the Townsend paper machine to satisfy the demand.

“We are delighted to have started operating the new CHP in Townsend Hook a month ahead of schedule,” said Jelte Bouma, CEO of Smurfit Kappa Recycled Paper West.
