How Will Okuma’s ORL Series Transform Factory Automation?

Okuma America Corporation, a prominent leader in CNC machine tools and automation, is set to make waves at the upcoming IMTS 2024 Show with its new line of robotics known as the Okuma Robot Loader (ORL) series. Unveiling three innovative products—ORL-D (Drawer), ORL-R (Rotary), and ORL-MC (Machining Center)—this proprietary line is designed to enhance productivity and efficiency in machining operations. The ORL series represents a significant advancement in factory automation, aimed at addressing the diverse needs of modern manufacturing environments.

The ORL series stands out due to its compact design and flexibility, making it a versatile solution for various manufacturing setups. The ORL-D features a drawer-style storage unit that can hold up to 92 workpieces, with an optional template for accommodating up to 180 smaller pieces. On the other hand, the ORL-R utilizes a disc-style storage system that can accommodate up to 166 workpieces, offering multiple template options for adaptability. The ORL-MC supports an impressive 288 workpieces, designed specifically for high-mix, low-volume manufacturing with its patented MultiGrip workholding system. This system allows for the automation of multiple part numbers across different operations, increasing overall efficiency.

One of the notable characteristics across all ORL models is their compact design, which occupies just eight to nine feet of floor space. This small footprint is achieved without compromising on capability, thanks to the use of FANUC industrial robot arms and grippers, which can handle payloads of up to 25 pounds. The ORL series’ ease of integration is also emphasized as a key benefit, making these solutions suitable for machine shops of varying sizes.
